In this  article we will give some consideration to factors
which should be considered if planning a family camping trip or
camping vacation and we will consider the camping gear and sourcing
discounted camping gear in later articles.
When planning a camping trip, your initial consideration is your budget
and  how much money you can afford to spend on the camping trip. I
f you are a first time camper, your initial layout will be higher as
you will have to buy a camping tent, camping equipment
and possibly cooking equipment.

Choosing your camping gear is  a crucial step and with a

bit of planning you can source a lot of discounted camping gear.

Before deciding to purchase any camping gear it is important to consider
the other elements that need consideration as you plan your camping vacation.
The following points need consideration and will ensure you have a quality,
stress free, enjoyable camping experience.

• At the risk of repeating myself, decide on your budget

•   How many of you are going on the trip and what is the age diversity?

• What are the activities proposed and are they appropriate and of interest to all  e.g if the camping trip includes fishing then some one will have to be assigned to mind the two year old toddler.

• Are you going to a serviced campsite and how do you intend getting there.

• Have you to consider toilet facilities or a camping loo.

• What camping equipment do you already own if any, if this is your first camping experience, could you borrow or rent some of  the equipment to ensure that it is an experience your family wishes to repeat.

• If you intend to go wild camping, do you need permission,

• what are the rules re fires and do you need to take precautions regarding wild animals etc.

• Is this camping trip planned for winter or summer , it isimportant to get a long range weather forecast nearer the trip.

• Ensure everyone has clothing suited to all eventualities and a change of clothes also.

• What cooking arrangements are you making, if you are on a serviced site are you using the on-site facilities or on the other extreme are you going to gather wood to boil your billy can of water, whilst you barbecue your fresh caught fish.

• Protect yourself from the outdoor elements.

I will give some of the points  consideration below and they will be

expanded on further  within the site on specific items of camping gear.

Camping Budget
The camping budget should take in to account the cost of getting to the proposed
site, cost of activities you propose to undertake and the daily cost of pitching
your tent if any, the obvious food and entertainment  costs, finally the
cost of camping equipment you may have to purchase prior to undertaking the trip.

Is the full family going camping, or does the extended family want to
come along
(dont get me started on the time the mother in law came along to mind the toddlers).
All I can say is  ensure your camp is adequate size, if you have older children
they may prefer their own pop up tent and a pop up tent is also a great
play area for smaller kids.

What Camping Activities do you intend to undertake.
Decide on  some outline of the activities before going on the
trip, perhaps you are satisfied to laze around  all day or you
have activities planned, perhaps fishing, hillwalking, surfing,
caneoing. Decide what equipment it is essential to bring,  would
it be more logical to hire some of the bulky equipment if that is
possible.

Serviced campsites are ideal for your first forays into camping and
indeed many people will only used serviced sites often returning to
the same site year after year. A serviced  campsite will usually have
good washing , cooking and toilet facilities, possibly combined with some
sports facilities such as playgrounds, tennis courts etc.
A discount camping gear tip would be to try and avoid
facilities where you are charged extra to use playgrounds or where
they have  lots of paid rides. these just suck your budget and you
have unhappy kids if they are not allowed use them.  If you are
bringing a vehicle, is their free parking, if travelling by bus or
train , do they do free transfers to the site.

The camping tent needs to be adequate size to sleep your group at a
minimum. Do you require a tent with a living are, will you be using
your tent all year round, will you camping in exposed sites, how
will you be transporting your tent, how much time do you want to spend
pitching your tent.  Have you adequate ground sheets (no were not
bringing air mattresses!), appropriate sleeping bags and  cooking
equipment if not using site equipment, cooking and eating utensils.
Camp Cooking and Equipment.
Oh the barbie expert is rolling in with a full setup including
butane barbie and all the gizmo’s except for the kitchen sink. It
happens but not much of a new experience in that , if you are really innovative you
possibly will gather the wood, make your own charcoal and improvise the barbie.
Be  careful where you light fires, ensure you have permission, stay away from tents,
keep childrenaway and ensure that the camp fire is totally extinguished.
If you are not into cooking then a  range of specialist camping foods are also available.
At  a minimum you will need adequate drinking water to ensure  no one becomes dehydrated.
Outdoor Elements
If you are camping for a number of days you can be exposed to a diverse range of elements.
Have warm clothes  for the cold evening, a waterproof jacket, if it is likely to rain.
It is essential to have sun protection cream and a quality first aid kit capable of
treating insect bites, small burns as well as cuts and bruises.
