Family Camping rules and camp site etiquette

If you are going on a family camping vacation, it is important to have clear roles and rules that are understood by all members of the group.. This will ensure all members of the family will enjoy the vacation and reduce the risk of misunderstanding and conflict whilst camping.

These roles and rules should be laid out and agreed prior to commencing the family camping vacation.

Obviously for every family the roles and rules will be different but a discussion and outline of common rules may be helpful. Rules should be kept simple and apply to all. Because you are camping and everyone is living in close proximity, a lot of rules enter around how the camp is kept and who does the routine camping tasks.
So some of the more common camp housekeeping rules would possibly go as follows:

Outdoor boots and wet clothing has to be kept out of sleeping areas.
Zippers especially insect nets must be kept closed in sleeping compartments at all times.

Designated area for all cooking and dining equipment. with a rota for cooking and cleaning so that this work is not left to one person for the holiday.

Rules regarding  wandering off from the camp, this is especially important when wild camping, also it must be clear to everyone that swimming in the nearby lake or sea should be an accompanied camping activity, not to be undertaken on ones own. This is especially important as you possibly are unfamiliar with the water, possible currents, shifting sand etc. Stress the importance to all of obeying all warning signs re possible dangers or pollution.

Children should be warned not to enter other camps in the vicinity without your prior approval at all times.

The above points apply to camping in any setting, but a range of additional rules apply if your family is going camping on a serviced site.

Each serviced family camp site will have its own rules and regulations.

Generally they are all very similar/ common rules .

Serviced campite rules are generally somewhat along the line outlined.
Usual disclaimers re injuries, accidents etc
Rules re camp pitching and keeping a sensible distance from other unrelated camps.
Rules re noise, curfew time as regards vehicle coming on to camp site
Garbage, recycling rules and location of facilities
Disposal of contaminated water and chemical toilet disposal rues and facilities.
Lighting of fires and barbecues on site, rules re fire location, fire material and fire quenching.
Some camp sites may allow you bring a pet, check on booking, follow rules re pets on leads, pooper scooping etc.
Rules re latest time for pitching camp and latest time of departure from site and condition your pitch is expected to be left in.
Do not interfere or adapt any of the camp site fixtures or fittings to suit your own needs.

If you obey the rules and leave your camping pitch like you would expect to find it, then you are always welcome back to a site.

The type of rules applying in serviced sites can be transferred to any type of family camping,

Additional rules may apply if you are wild camping  such as:

Are we allowed camp here
Are we allowed to light a fire, is it safe and sensible to light a fire
Are we going to damage the micro environment if we pitch a tent in a particular area.
Do we have to take any extra safety precautions against wild animals, roaming bulls or maybe even agitated locals if we get it totally wrong.

If you are clear about the rules and have discussed them with all the family, no issues should arise on your camping vacation.

Respect the habitat and environment we are camping in and respect the rights of others including our fellow campers, landowners etc , then we should have little issues. Obvously security and protecting your valuables should always be a priority when camping.
